Union Kitchen & Tap is right in the heart of some of California’s best surf spots in Encinitas. With plenty of open seating indoors and outdoors, it’s a great place for a big or small group to eat and enjoy cocktails, local brews and most importantly – a delicious burger. From Executive Chef, Jason Gethin comes the Union Burger, cooked how you like it (I went Medium Well today) it is big, it is juicy and it is wonderful. The aged white cheddar mixed with cherrywood bacon gives it a nice texture and taste combination that adds to the already perfectly prepared hamburger patty. The other unique part of the Union Burger is the tomato jam added to the top bun. Rather than covering the whole thing with ketchup, the tomato jam gives it a unique flair without you missing the joy of ketchup on a burger. It was a fun surprise. So was the garlic aioli and flavorful house pickles. It all came together nicely in the brioche bun.
From first bite to final finger lick, the Union Burger was absolutely wonderful and the fries worked well with the burger too. Crispy but not crazy, they were pretty traditional french fries that complimented the Union Burger wonderfully. In other words, this was made to impress and it did the job.
I’d recommend it for any lunch or dinner. It was very filling so come hungry but it wasn’t messy so you’ll be able to eat it for a work lunch or even on a date. The atmosphere of Union Kitchen was welcoming, fun and filled with reminders that you were in a cool beach town. Head over to Union Kitchen when you’re in the area and you’ll be very happy. Get yourself a cornbread appetizer too (holy cow!!!)
